Beer and Bars

Ok, I have been on a bit of a "jungle run" lately and have been spending some time at many different pubs, bars, and night clubs trying to meet new people and enjoying different environments. It has been a great experience and here is what I have learned:

First off, I have to say I am sometimes attracted to things that tend to be bad for me just to see what will happen. I am allergic to wheat of all things and so I sometimes like to order a popular beer here in Saskatoon called Harvest Wheat or Honey Wheat. Last night I found by far the greatest version of Honey Wheat at The Spadina Freehouse. I was immediately surprised by the flavour and smoothness of it. I asked the bartender where it was brewed and he shocked me by exclaiming that it was made by Great Western, the only all Canadian brewer left on Earth! I am proud to say that they have continued to make a great product for years and in fact have now surpassed the best of beers anywhere! Thanks and keep up the great work, Great Western Brewing Company! Before I forget, the Jerk Chicken skewers were amazing with mango sauce, what taste! Thanks again to The Spadina Freehouse.

Another place I have re-discovered is Earls on 2nd Avenue. A great atmosphere with a nice mix of music with fantastic screens to watch the NHL Play-offs. The beer pints are a great price too!

Working the early morning shifts has really forced me to find these and more great places in Saskatoon, what a fun city, round the clock. My morning walks have really inspired me to write a few more original songs, too bad I don't have recording contract or something. Maybe I will try karaoke next.

Food Update

EE Buritos is better than "not bad". The second time I went there, I got a huge burito for $5 and the beef was delicious! I think I will go back there today. TJ's Pizza is not as busy as it was but that is because of the time of the month. Business around Saskatoon has slowed to a crawl just like the traffic on the snow packed roads. Spicy food can fix that!

Mad Cow: Crisis or Money Grab?

We took a trip to The Real Canadian Superstore this afternoon to pick something up for supper today. To our surprise, the price of steak had dropped and the price of chicken went up slightly. Never have I seen a year where the price of steak has been so low and the temperature outside has been so warm in winter. Life is good in Saskatoon!

Saskatoon's Top Food and Entertainment Critic

Ok, in response to the slanderous " IMHO - Toby J. Carroll " blog, I have decided to make a response. I firstly would like to take the time to appologize ahead of time before this gets out of hand. This is clearly not my fault. You see, if the price of gas stayed at a reasonable 60 cents a liter, I never would have even thought of getting out of the pizza business, however, I blame whatever happens from this point forward on Huricane Katrina.

Having worked there for an incredible amount of time, I still believe they make the best pizza for the most reasonable price. They are completely locally owned and operated, as far as I know, and their menu is filled with great combinations, successful coupon campaigns, and exciting cartoon-like promotions on the back of each flier! The pizza sauce is addicting to say the least...

Now that I am going to school full time in the heart of downtown, I have taken the opportunity to take in some of the fine dining and review the restaurants that I never had a chance to sit down in due to my former delivery driver job. This past week I decided to try Chau's lunch buffet. It was really very good and I was greated with friendly service and a fast and filling meal with a huge variety of items to choose from. This is one place I surely will return to in the near future.

With a mix of today's hottest music styles, Ryly's is the full package. To experience Saskatoon's best night club in full effect, Monday night is when the club is jam packed with top DJ's busting the "toons" out! Of course my personal favorite is DJ Baldilox from Club 402 and Sharkey's fame but he mostly kicks it at Ryly's on Saturday nights and plays the hardcore rap, hip hop and reggae styles.

Wendy's Chain of Restaurants

With a huge amount of experience using "drive threw" restaurants, I felt it was necessary to make a mention of my favorite. The food at Wendy's is tasty and the service is always fast and friendly. Prices are as reasonable as it gets and your menu choices are better than that of other fast food restaurant chains that keep trying items that are sometimes disgusting and simply don't work for me. Wendy's has a consistantly great menu!
